Read the Qur'an in the Chronological Order of Revelation in Modern English

Why chronological order? Because God revealed the Qur'an gradually, with no verses commanding fighting or warfare until the 87th revealed surah (Al-Baqarah). Yet in the traditional order, these verses appear almost immediately in the 2nd surah (Al-Baqarah) without the earlier context of patient warning.

God Sent Down the Qur'an in Stages so that Muhammad could Warn his People Over Time, just as Noah, Hud, Salih, Abraham, Lot, Shu'ayb, and Moses Warned their Nations Before Each were Destroyed

Likewise, the People of Muhammad Received Warning After Warning Before God Destroyed them for Evicting and Killing Believers

But whenever a surah is sent down, there are those among the hypocrites who say, "Which of you has this increased faith?"  As for those who believed, it has increased them in faith.  But as for those who had disease in their hearts, it has only increased them in evil in addition to their evil.  Do they not see that they are tried once or twice every year but then they do not repent nor do they remember? And whenever a surah is sent down, they turn away.  God has turned their hearts away because they are a people who do not understand.  For a messenger has certainly come to you from among yourselves.

But if you do not aid the prophet - God has already aided him when those who disbelieved had driven him out, the second of the two. Then God sent His tranquility down upon His messenger and upon the believers and sent down armies of angels whom you did not see and punished those who disbelieved. And that is the recompense of the disbelievers. So fight against the polytheists collectively as they fight against you collectively. And know that God is with those who fear Him. Or would you not fight a people who broke their oaths and determined to expel the messenger, and they had begun the attack upon you the first time? Do you fear them? But God has more right that you should fear Him, if you are believers. So fight those who do not believe in God or in the Last Day and who do not forbid what God has forbidden and also His messenger, and who do not adopt the religion of truth from those who were given the Scripture - for God is disassociated from the polytheists. So O you who have believed, indeed the polytheists are unclean, so do not let them approach the Forbidden House after this, their final year.

God Revealed the Qur'an to Muhammad so that he may Warn the Mother of Cities [Makkah] and those Around it, for they will be Massacred Completely

Just as God Destroyed the People of Pharaoh and 'Aad and Thamud and Noah and Many Generations Between them; Then do they Await Nothing Except Like What Occurred with those Before them?

25:37 - 39, Qur'an
[Remember] the people of Noah - when they denied the messengers, We drowned them, and We made them a sign for mankind.  And We have prepared a painful punishment for the wrongdoers.
And [We destroyed] 'Aad and Thamud and the companions of the well and many generations between them.  And We set forth examples [as warnings] for each, and We destroyed each with [total] destruction.

26:208 - 209, Qur'an
[But] We did not destroy any city except that it had warners
as a reminder and We have never been unjust.

42:7, Qur'an
And thus We have revealed an Arabic Qur'an to you [O Muhammad] so that you may warn the Mother of Cities [Makkah] and those around it;

53:56, Qur'an
[For] this [prophet Muhammad] is a warner like the former warners -

73:15 - 16, Qur'an
[For] We have sent a messenger [Muhammad] to you as a witness upon you just as We sent a messenger [Moses] to Pharaoh.
But Pharaoh disobeyed the messenger, so We seized him with a ruinous seizure.

51:59, Qur'an
[And] indeed, there is a portion [of punishment] for those who have wronged [among Makkah] like the portion of their predecessors, so do not let them impatiently urge Me.

7:34, Qur'an
[For] there is an [appointed] term for every nation [to be destroyed]. So when their time has come, they will not postpone it an hour, nor will they advance [it] -

33:61 - 62, Qur'an
[And thus, the people of Makkah will be] accursed wherever they are found, being seized and massacred completely.
[This is the established] way of God with those who passed on before; and you will not find any change in the way of God -

53:50 - 54, Qur'an
[For] He destroyed the first [people of] 'Aad
and Thamud - and He did not spare [them] - and the people of Noah before. Indeed, it was they who were [even] more unjust and oppressing. And He hurled down the overturned towns and covered them by that which He covered.

10:102 - 103, Qur'an
[Then] do they wait for [nothing] except like [what occurred in] the days of those who passed on before them? Say, "Then wait; indeed, I am with you among those who wait."
Then We will save Our messengers and those who have believed. Thus, it is an obligation upon Us that We save the believers.

We have Certainly Given you Seven of the Often Repeated [Narrations] and the Great Qur'an

Whereby We Sent Our Messengers - Noah [1], Hud [2], Salih [3], Abraham [4], Lot [5], Shu'ayb [6], and Moses [7] - who Said to their People, "Will you Not Fear God?" But they Denied them, so God Seized them, Then He Made them [Seven Often Repeated] Narrations

23:44, Qur'an
We sent Our messengers in succession.  Every time a messenger came to his nation, they denied him, so We made them follow one another [to destruction], and We made them narrations.  So away with a people who do not believe.

11:120, Qur'an
[So] each story We relate to you from the news of the messengers is that by which We make your heart firm.  And the truth and an instruction and a reminder for the believers have come to you in this -

15:87, Qur'an
[For] We have certainly given you seven of the often repeated [narrations] and the great Qur'an.

22:42 - 44, Qur'an
[But] if they deny you [O Muhammad], - so did the people of Noah [1] and 'Aad [2] and Thamud [3] deny [their prophets] before them,
and the people of Abraham [4] and the people of Lot [5] and the companions of Midian [6].  And Moses [7] was denied, so I prolonged enjoyment for the disbelievers; then I seized them, and how [terrible] was My reproach.

26:8 - 11, Qur'an
[So] indeed there is a sign in that, but most of them are not believers.
And indeed, your Lord - He is the Almighty, the Merciful.  And [so remember] when your Lord called Moses [1], [saying], "Go to the wrongdoing people - the people of Pharaoh.  Will they not fear [God]?"

26:65 - 70, Qur'an
[But they denied him, so] We saved Moses and those with him, all together.
Then We drowned the others. Indeed there is a sign in that, but most of them are not believers.  And indeed, your Lord - He is the Almighty, the Merciful.  And recite the news of Abraham [2] to them, when he said to his father and his people, "What do you serve?"

26:103 - 106, Qur'an
[But they denied him, so] indeed there is a sign in that, but most of them are not believers.
And indeed, your Lord - He is the Almighty, the Merciful. The people of Noah [3] denied the messengers, when their brother Noah said to them, "Will you not fear [God]?"

26:119 - 124, Qur'an
[But they denied him,] so We saved him and those with him in the laden ark.
Then We drowned the remaining ones thereafter. Indeed there is a sign in that, but most of them are not believers.  And indeed, your Lord - He is the Almighty, the Merciful.  'Aad [4] denied the messengers, when their brother Hud said to them, "Will you not fear [God]?"

26:139 - 142, Qur'an
[But] they denied him, so We destroyed them. Indeed there is a sign in that, but most of them are not believers.
And indeed, your Lord - He is the Almighty, the Merciful.  Thamud [5] denied the messengers, when their brother Salih said to them, "Will you not fear [God]?"

26:157 - 161, Qur'an
But they hamstrung [the female camel] and so became regretful.
So the punishment seized them. Indeed there is a sign in that, but most of them are not believers.  And indeed, your Lord - He is the Almighty, the Merciful. The people of Lot [6] denied the messengers, when their brother Lot said to them, "Will you not fear [God]?"

26:173 - 177, Qur'an
[But they denied him, so] We rained a rain [of stones] upon them, and the rain of those who were warned was [indeed] evil.
Indeed there is a sign in that, but most of them are not believers.  And indeed, your Lord - He is the Almighty, the Merciful.  The companions of the thicket [7] denied the messengers, when Shu'ayb said to them, "Will you not fear [God]?"

26:189 - 192, Qur'an
[But] they denied him, so the punishment of the day of the black cloud seized them. Indeed, it was the punishment of a great day.
Indeed there is a sign in that, but most of them are not believers.  And indeed, your Lord - He is the Almighty, the Merciful. And indeed, [the Qur'an] is the revelation of the Lord of the worlds.

39:23, Qur'an
[And thus,] God has sent down the best narration: a consistent Book and often repeated.  The skins of those who fear their Lord shiver therefrom; then their skins and their hearts relax at the remembrance of God.  That is the guidance of God by which He guides whomever He wills.  And one whom God leaves astray - there is no guide for him -

12:111, Qur'an
[For] there was certainly a lesson in their stories for those of understanding. The Qur'an was never an invented narration, but a guidance and mercy for a people who believe and a confirmation of what was before it and a detailed explanation of all things.
